Meeting opened at 5:36 by Caroline Winter.

Previous minutes November 26, 2014 signed.

  1. Correspondence
    1. CSPT conference: solicited for funds but we declined out of necessity
  2. Executive update
    1. News from M.A. Representative: Lawrence Evalyn
      • Off-record airing of concerns
      • Discussion of appropriating one English 502 TA to English 500
    2. News from Ph.D. Representative: Caroline Winter
      • Department meeting: eliminating the GPO position and replacing with Student Grants Officer (review grant applications, mentor students); idea forum: mini, monthly colloquium
      • GSS meeting with Dean of Graduate Studies: emphasis on wanting student input; support for families; working towards ending firm thesis deadlines (to avoid fees)
      • Implementing guidelines for supervisor and committee responsibilities. Possibility of revising the supervisor/supervisee contract
  3. Officer Reports
    1. Academic and Professional Chair: Emily Hector
      • Nominated by Nadia, seconded by Alyssa
    2. Conferences and Colloquia Chair: Becky Rogers (not present)
      • Possibility of organizing an end of term conference within the English department – “share-your-work” mentality
    3. Social Chair: Alyssa Currie
      • Holiday party was a success – YAY!
      • Treasure & Tea “New Scholars Roundtable” coming up
      • Idea Fest is coming up. English department is developing a panel called “Why Study English Now?”
      • 3-Minute Thesis competition
      • Supervisor “match-making” event: help new students find supervisors
      • Music bingo social event?
      • Web presence workshop: developing a Twitter account (co-event between Social Chair & Academic/Professional Chair). Possibility of incorporating a quasi-professional photoshoot. Update profiles on the faculty website
      • Possibility of graduate student retreat to Cowichan cabin at the end of the semester
  4. Treasurer: Nadia Timperio
    • Bank account: maybe not necessary? Colleen is currently holding our money. This is a good short-term solution but possibly set up a bank account for a long-term solution. Email Gary and Colleen about setting up a bank account
  5. New business
    1. Kicking Horse coffee: wait until the bank account is set up and then revisit at the February
